“Abracadabra.” A word I’ve always associated with childhood magic tricks and illusions—until last Thursday, during my visit to the Alberta Gallery of Art with my godson, Keon Jeffrey. There, an official shared that the ancient word actually means manifestation.

The word formed part of Blair Brennan’s presentation, “Perish Like The Word,” in the exhibition “Fire’s Burning.” His work explores humanity’s deep, almost sacred connection to fire. Fire, Brennan reminds us, is paradoxical—it destroys, yet it also creates, welcomes, warns, and nourishes.

And that’s what this space, Sunday Spread, hopes to do: nourish your soul, spark inspiration, and empower you each week.

“In the particular is contained the universal.” These words by James Joyce came alive again recently when Dr. Huamei Han, Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University, used them while giving feedback on my nephew Stephen Jones’ short film, Gyas Brains, which was featured at the 5th Annual Vancouver Black Independent Film Festival (Afrofuturism, Oct 30 – Nov 2).

The film highlights the emerging car-racing industry in Trinidad and Tobago—a fresh and thrilling take on Caribbean creativity. It shows that by sharing our truth, we give voice to the truths of many others.

So here’s to telling your story, however small it may seem—because within it, the universal unfolds.

Life is good!!!- JJM.
